CATEGORIES OF GERMAN DRIVERS LICENSES

In Germany the driving licence is a governmental privilege given to those who request a licence for any of the categories they desire. It is required for every type of motorised vehicle with the exception of the smallest mopeds below 50cm³, with a speed limit of

  1. Type A (A-type)
    This license type is valid for vehicles that have been manufactured before 1 January 1998. The vehicle must not exceed 6.0 metres in length and 2.8 metres in width. The maximum permissible weight of the vehicle is 4.5 tonnes.
  2. Type B (B-type)
    This licence type is valid for vehicles manufactured after 1 January 1998. The length of the vehicle cannot exceed 5.0 metres. The width of the vehicle cannot exceed 2.8 metres. The maximum permissible weight is 4.5 tonnes
  3. Type C (C-type)
    This type of driver’s license is valid for vehicles that are longer than 6.0 metres in total length and wider than 2.8 metres in total width. The maximum permissible load is 8.0 tonnes.
  4. Type D (D-type)
    This is a special category of drivers’ licenses for trucks and buses. These vehicles are permitted to carry loads exceeding 10.0 tonnes.
  5. Type E (E-type)
    This category of driver’s licenses is valid for vehicles that do not fall under any of the categories mentioned above.
